Back in July 2015, a colleague and I were invited to join a charity Dragonboat team, and race against other teams in the annual Dragonboat race at Pugneys Country Park in Wakefield organised by the Wakefield Chantry and Huddersfield Rotary clubs. We didn’t know what to expect, but the outstanding memory of the day was the weather, red hot sunshine, slightly cooled by the breeze coming from the lake.
So, this year we decided to enter our own team and raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support and as most people were as unaware as to what was involved in a Dragonboat race as we were in the first year, we had to sell the idea based solely on the promise of blisteringly hot weather. Of course, we couldn’t deliver on this promise and we had torrential downpours for the majority of the day. At one point, the lake water felt much warmer than the water which had saturated our clothes and the thought of capsizing would have been welcome respite from the potential hypothermia caused by the driving rain.
Despite this, all of our team were in good spirits and after a tricky first race, we pulled it back to win the second but unfortunately we were not as successful in the third which meant that we didn’t make the final.
In the end, we all had a great time and we raised over £1000 for charity so thank you to all those who were involved and all those who supported us and see you next year on the bank side, the weather will be amazing!!!!!
